Meet the Owners
As owners and directors, David and Carisa Steinberg create safe and exciting travel experiences that provide campers with the opportunity to explore their world.
David has accumulated over 26 years of experience in camping, first as a camper, then as a counselor, trip director, associate director and now as an owner/director.
It was during his summers away that he learned how to be independent and self-reliant, yet an integral part of the camp family. It was camp that allowed him to discover his strengths, improve his weaknesses and simply have an amazing time. It was as a counselor, however, when David truly understood the profound impact of a positive role model. As his professional career progressed so did his passion - to provide campers with a safe and fun environment for exploration and growth through travel. And so, Canteen Roads was born.
Working with children has always been a central theme in David’s life. Upon completion of his Bachelors degree in Secondary Education and Youth Service from Queens College and a Masters Degree In Education From SUNY Stony Brook, David went on to become a high school biology teacher at Syosset High School. In his time there, he has become more than a classroom teacher, as his commitment to the students transcends the boundaries of the traditional classroom. He advises two of the schools largest clubs, Student Government and Interact Community Service Club, an affiliate of Rotary International.
Carisa was born and raised in eastern Long Island, spending her summers with her siblings and friends at local camps. Passionate about environmental science, she earned her B.S. at Cornell University. Living in the Finger Lakes made her appreciate life outdoors; this is where she first began her hobbies of hiking, camping and gardening. In her junior year she embarked on her first serious travels to study abroad in Sydney, Australia where her passion for exploring was born.
While obtaining her Masters degree at Teachers College of Columbia University, she again traveled abroad, spending her winter break in a small village in Costa Rica working on a scientific study. Her love of exploration and immersion into other cultures continued and she soon spent weeks deep in the northern forests of Quebec. Several years later she fulfilled one of her many dreams - studying elephant behavior in one of South Africa’s national parks. Currently, Carisa enjoys teaching her students Science Research, Honors and AP Biology at Syosset High School. After school, she also relishes the opportunity to share her passion for community service as she advises the Interact Club.
Together they hope to share with their campers what they hope to provide for their daughter: a love for traveling across America as well as safe and fun opportunities for experiential learning and personal growth. Canteen Roads is their family, one that keeps growing and evolving, and they welcome you and your child to join them for an amazing summer journey.
